A Tudor timbered house that’s now a boutique hotel run by Laura Ashley, the Edgwarebury enjoyed a glittering screen career of its own, appearing as the tennis club in 1960’s School For Scoundrels (for Terry-Thomas’s classic “hard cheese” scene) and in 1968 Hammer horror The Devil Rides Out. Most of the cast stayed here during filming, though the interior, with its ornate fireplace and heavy wood, was filmed at the Edgwarebury Hotel in Elstree, Hertfordshire. It’s also the site of The Swan, the hotel where Sgt Nicholas Angel (Pegg) stays while waiting for the 'lovely little cottage on Spencer Hill' he’s been promised. This is where you’ll find the Market Cross and fountain, the film’s hangout for the local teenage hoodies that’s crashed into, graffitied and finally the scene of an ultraviolent shootout. The production spent six weeks encamped here – long enough for one shop to start a campaign in the local paper to get rid of them, according to Wright.
